The African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP) is a collaboration between the Government of Botswana (GOB), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Merck Company Foundation/Merck & Co., Inc., to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS in Botswana. ACHAP, established in July 2000, supports the goals of the GOB to decrease HIV incidence and significantly increase the rate of diagnosis and the treatment of the disease, by rapidly advancing prevention program, healthcare access, patient management and treatment of HIV/AIDS.

The Children's AIDS Fund (CAF) works to limit suffering of children and their families caused by HIV disease by providing care, services, resources, referrals, and education. The Children's AIDS Fund (CAF) was founded in 1988 as a program of Americans for a Sound AIDS/HIV Policy (ASAP). ASAP initiated the program--then called the ASAP Children's Assistance Fund--to help HIV-impacted families deal with a variety of practical aspects of living with HIV.

The Women, Children, and HIV website is the result of a collaboration between the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Center at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and the Center for HIV Information (CHI) at the University of California San Francisco. It disseminates state-of-the-art clinical information and training resources on mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV and related topics.

The World Bank--in partnership with others--is working to roll back the spread of this global epidemic. As the largest long-term investor in prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS in developing countries, the World Bank Group is working with its partners to: prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS among vulnerable groups and in the general population; promote countries' health policies and multi-sectoral approaches (e.g. by working in education, social safety nets, transport and other vital areas); expand basic care and treatment activities for those affected by HIV/AIDS and their families, as well as for children whose parents have died of AIDS and other vulnerable children. The World Bank is working with all regions in the developing world that are affected by HIV/AIDS.

World Health Organization's (WHO's) 3 by 5 Initiative

The World Health Organization (WHO) created the 3 by 5 Initiative because there are currently six million people living with HIV/AIDS in developing countries that urgently need access to antiretroviral treatment (ART). Only 400,000 have this access. WHO and its partners are working with full commitment to achieve the 3 by 5 target--providing access to ART to 3 million people living with HIV/AIDS in developing countries by the end of 2005.
